Our arable farm
Farming is at the heart of what we have always done
For 10 generations, our family has been ‘farming’ at Oud Bommenede. Indeed, that's where it all started. The core of our estate. For us, farming always meant arable farming. Growing crops, in other words. The types of crops rotate through time, but the basis has mostly been potatoes and cereals. But we also still grow crops like flax to this day.
Currently, we grow about seven crops on about 60 hectares of land:
- Potatoes - mainly for chips
- Onions - which you find in the supermarket
- Sugar beet - for sugar, of course
- Wheat - for flour for baking bread, but also partly for our own beer
- Barley - for brewing (our own) beer
- Flax - where the fibre is made into linen or insulation material and the seed for linseed (oil)
- Peas - the canned peas you find in the freezer compartment or jars
There is always something interesting happening on the farm. See something happening that you don't quite understand what exactly it is, or why exactly it is happening? Ask us! We just love explaining our beautiful profession.
We often supply our crops for industry. After all, the quantities we grow are large. Sometimes that is a pity, because we never see a satisfied end customer. We have changed that. We now also have beer made from our own grains: Zonnewit. And that beer, we do see smiles when our guests drink it. That gives us even more satisfaction. Also curious about how it tastes?
